- STEPS Program Reserchers Play a Leading Role in Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS)
- The Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) sets a goal to reduce the carbon intensity of California’s passenger vehicle fuels by at least 10 percent by the year 2020. This is expected to replace 20 percent of our on-road gasoline consumption with lower-carbon fuels. Heading up the UC study is Dan Sperling, of UC Davis, and Alex Farrell, of UC Berkeley. According to Dan Sperling, the LCFS “will steer energy policy and investments for many years and provide a framework that we can build on in the future.”The first LCFS report was released in May, 2007, and received substantial praise, including a letter of appreciation from Governor Schwarzenegger. STEPS researchers were part of the UC team and the group exhibited the kind of multi-disciplinary research that the STEPS program strives to achieve. STEPS researchers who contributed to the project included Mark Delucchi, Anthony Eggert, Jonathan Hughes, Bryan Jenkins, Chris Knittel, Marc Melaina, Joan Ogden, Dan Sperling, Chris Yang, and Rob Williams. Additional LCFS information can be found here:
- STEPS Researcher Participating in Summer Research Program Sponsored by the US DOE
- David McCollum, graduate student in Transportation Technology and Policy, has been selected to participate in the Summer 2007 Research Experience in Carbon Sequestration (RECS) program. This two week program is supported by U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy and the National Energy Technology Laboratory, and is hosted by Montana State University. It brings together a group of 35 young researchers for an intensive course on carbon sequestration technology, with lectures from international experts, and site visits.

- UC Davis Alternative Fuels Policy Briefing
- The UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS-Davis) is pleased to announce a briefing for policymakers on “Future Transportation Energy” on October 15th, at CalEPA headquarters in Sacramento (agenda attached). This briefing offers a rare opportunity to get up to speed on today’s quickly emerging climate change and energy policy issues; UC Davis’s leading scientists and policy experts are uniquely qualified to offer this seminar. Please join us for this event, designed for anyone involved in transportation, energy and climate change policy development. The presentations will provide the most up-to-date information at a general level, making the event accessible for all policymakers, regardless of their experience with energy and climate change. Topics will include transportation alternatives such as hydrogen and biomass fuels, and advanced hybrid vehicle technology. We look forward to engaging as many policy experts as possible, and the event does not require an invitation. Please feel free to distribute this announcement widely. We welcome your involvement in the event!
