STEPS Program Reserchers Play a Leading Role in Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS)
The Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) sets a goal to reduce the carbon intensity of California’s passenger vehicle fuels by at least 10 percent by the year 2020. This is expected to replace 20 percent of our on-road gasoline consumption with lower-carbon fuels. Heading up the UC study is Dan Sperling, of UC Davis, and Alex Farrell, of UC Berkeley. According to Dan Sperling, the LCFS “will steer energy policy and investments for many years and provide a framework that we can build on in the future.”The first LCFS report was released in May, 2007, and received substantial praise, including a letter of appreciation from Governor Schwarzenegger. STEPS researchers were part of the UC team and the group exhibited the kind of multi-disciplinary research that the STEPS program strives to achieve. STEPS researchers who contributed to the project included Mark Delucchi, Anthony Eggert, Jonathan Hughes, Bryan Jenkins, Chris Knittel, Marc Melaina, Joan Ogden, Dan Sperling, Chris Yang, and Rob Williams.
